Next.js: performance tips that actually matter

Practical techniques to improve Core Web Vitals in Next.js apps — from bundle splitting to streaming.

Performance isn't premature optimization when recruiters open your portfolio on mobile. Here are the techniques that made the biggest impact on my Next.js projects.

1. Server Components by default

Push interactivity to the edges. Most of my portfolio pages are Server Components — zero client JavaScript for static content.

2. Dynamic imports with intent

TSX
const Starfield = dynamic(() => import("@/components/Starfield"), {
  ssr: false,
  loading: () => null,
});

Heavy animations load only when needed. Main content renders instantly.

3. Fonts with display: swap

Google Fonts via next/font eliminates layout shift. Pick at most 2 families.

4. Images with correct priority

Only the hero uses priority. Everything else lazy-loads. WebP/AVIF when possible.

Result

Lighthouse Performance: 96 on mobile. LCP under 1.2s on simulated 4G.

The golden rule: measure before optimizing. Use the Performance tab, not guesses.
